Avoiding Common Winter-related Workers’ Comp Claims

The trucking industry has risks and perils that could contribute to serious accidents and employee injuries. Even isolated or seemingly minor incidents can inflict long-lasting and severe health issues on your employees, potentially stunting their quality of life and productivity, and incurring costly losses and workers’ comp claims. As an employer, understanding and addressing potential risks should be a top priority to limit these situations and minimize their consequences.

Frequent Trucking Workers’ Comp Claims During Winter

Consider the following potential injuries and ailments which may be likely to occur amid winter conditions:

  • Slips and falls—Among the most common types of work-related injuries across all sectors, these incidents should not be taken lightly. Truckers load and unload vehicles, often in parking lots or on loading docks prone to slippery conditions, and the resulting injuries can be devastating. Encourage employees to take their time while working, put down salt and other ice removal materials and wear nonslip footwear.
  • Strains and sprains—Workers in this industry often must lift and carry significant weight, and working in cold temperatures can make it more likely they’ll sustain injuries during moments of exertion. Encourage employees to stretch and warm up their muscles before beginning work and to use proper lifting techniques even for loads they may think are not problematic.
  • Cold stress illnesses—Trucking employees must be mindful of cold temperatures. Even limited exposure can quickly lead to hypothermia and frostbite, which could cause far-reaching health issues. Encourage employees to dress appropriately for winter conditions and to take frequent breaks in warm areas.
  • Vehicle accidents—Winter road conditions can be particularly perilous, as hazy visibility, decreased daylight and slippery surfaces can significantly increase the risk of accidents. Advise employees to lower their speed, increase following distance and avoid driving if possible during particularly inclement weather.
